Season Wrap-Up

January 12, 2014

Season Report Posted: October 14, 2008 00:01

The UL-Monroe War Hawks finished a very good season at 9-5 (4-4). This was an adjustment year for ULM, as this is their first year in the SEC and with a true Freshman QB in Steve Davis. The second half of the season was much different from the first half, as the bulk of conference play hit the War Hawks hard, causing them to drop 4 of 8 conference games on the season. The 7th game of the year was against South Carolina and was taken easily 17-7 heading into 'Bama. This is where the season took a bad turn for the Hawks. ULM was shut down by an unranked Crimson Tide and a #16 Florida that knocked them out of the Top 25. The Warhawks were able to rebound with two wins against Kentucky and Rice, but were stopped by #7 Tennessee in their final game. The season stopped at 8-4 for the War Hawks who then played Oklahoma State in the PetroSun Independence Bowl in Shreveport, LA.

JR (RS) Wide Receiver David Soltis said this: "It felt good to win that last one. We have some great guys graduating and it was great to end with a win and in a bowl game too. We're going to miss guys like Clifton, Trevor, and Shannon and will hope to produce without them." The reporter then asked if Soltis himself was planning on going pro. Soltis replied, "Honestly, I'm not sure yet. It could go either way. I feel I could be great at the next level but I'd love to stay and help the team. I'll get back to you on that one."

The War Hawks will look to become an SEC contender as the years go on and look to do so with some great, high quality recruits coming in for the years to come. Coach Charlie Weatherbie also signed a 6 year contract extension all the way through the year 2020, so look for more of the same in the years to come.

Mid-Season Report

Season Report Posted: October 07, 2008 00:32

The Warhawks of UL-Monroe have started off their first season in the SEC on a good note, currently standing at a 5-1 (2-1) record. The Warhawks started out the season with an easy 10-7 win over the USF Bulls. True Freshman QB Steve Davis is at the helm and is performing well. The #18 Warhawks then squared off against the Arkansas Razorbacks in an SEC battle and came out on top 24-21 after a terrific game that was decided in the last 30 seconds. Arkansas looked to have the upset when they threw a touchdown pass with 20 seconds left, but that all changed when Dave Trott returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to put the game away and keep the Warhawks undefeated. The following game against the UAB Blazers went well as the Warhawks dominated the game and came out 3-0 going into their annual rivalry game against UL-Lafeyette. This chapter of the rivalry game was literally decided on the first play by a 70 yard touchdown reception from Steve Davis to David Soltis, which was later called the play of the game. The Warhawks went on to win 17-14. The following game against the Ole Miss Rebels was not a good one for the Warhawks but still came out with the win. Monroe failed to get into the endzone on all 4 redzone attempts but kicked a field goal on every one to win 12-7, heading into a tough matchup against #16 Georgia. A 13-16 matchup, the Bulldogs looked like a tough opponent and showed they were throughout the game. The Warhawks were lucky enough to make it to overtime, but the turnovers in the air from Freshman QB Steve Davis cost the game for the Warhawks as they fell 24-17 in OT. The Warhawks drop to #20 in the AP Top 25 and look to rebound against a pesky South Carolina team. The Warhawks final 6 games include a visit to South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Rice, and Tennessee and one home game against Kentucky. The Warhawks look to round out the year around 10 wins and the top of the SEC. All-in-all this has been a stellar year so far for Steve Davis and this young Warhawks team.
