Season Wrap-Up

January 1, 2022

Season Report Posted: December 24, 2008 17:57

The ULM Warhawks capped off a season that was much less than what the nation expected. After finishing the first half of the season which included a loss to unranked South Carolina, the Warhawks had the bulk of their schedule to face. With an easy 77-14 win against 1-AA Midwest, the 'Hawks then had back to back road games. The first was against #17 LSU and it almost was a costly one for the Warhawks as they went into overtime and won on a game winning field goal on the foot of Ron McKinney. Next the #8 Warhawks went down into the Swamp to face conference rival #2 Florida. Florida stayed with the Warhawks all game and when it looked like Florida had the game, Henry Kane broke off a huge run that gave the Warhawks the upset and shot up to #6 heading into an easy game against Kentucky. After defeating the Wildcats 42-7, Monroe went down to Tennessee to face the #25 Vol's. The Volunteers were no match for the Warhawks as Monroe won 42-24 with only one regular season game left against rival UL-Lafayette, what was thought to be an easy win. The Warhawks did get that easy win and finished their regular season at 11-1 and #5 in the nation going into the conference championship round against #17 LSU. Another game that went down to the wire was decided by All American back Henry Kane who took home the Warhawks' 6th SEC Title in 7 years and 3rd consecutive title. The conference title win earned the Warhawks a spot against #8 Michigan in the Sugar Bowl, a bowl that Monroe had bad history in. Things just did not swing the Warhawks way. On their final drive Henry Kane was sidelined with a small injury that kept him from helping the team. Meanwhile, a Jon Miller fumble ended the game and the Warhawks season at 12-2. Henry Kane finished with 1940 yards on 164 attenpts and 31 touchdowns as well as 3 receiving touchdowns. Craig Moore had his best season by going 107/146 for 1403 yards with 19 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Kane also took home the Maxwell and Walker Awards, but most importantly of all, Kane took home back-to-back Heisman trophies. Kane is only the 3rd player to do this behind Archie Griffin (OSU) and Tim Tebow (UF). Kane will graduate from Monroe and have his #20 retired by the team. Kane will likely play in the pro's and will most likely be a very successful back. The Warhawks struggled a little this year, especially on defense, but are looking to improve on a less than stellar season in 2022.

Mid-Season Report

For the first time in school history the ULM Warhawks started the season at #1 in the national polls. The Warhawks started out their season with a convincing 35-19 win over Akron led by JR QB Craig Moore and Heisman, All-American RB Henry Kane. The Warhawks followed with a 35-21 conference win over Ole Miss. Week 3 rolled around and the Warhawks went down to South Carolina. The Warhawks had beaten the Gamecocks in recent years but have historically had problems with South Carolina. The Warhawks could not get anything going all game while the Gamecocks managed to get 2 key touchdowns and a field goal. The Gamecocks had pulled off one of the biggest upsets in football history, winning 17-7 and dethroning the Warhawks. The now #11 Warhawks followed their devastating loss with a 42-20 win over Mississippi State. The Warhawks then went down to Florida to square off with a weak Florida Atlantic team out of the Sun Belt. The Warhawks manhandled the Owls 30-7 going into a home game against conference opponent Georgia. The Warhawks started out slow but a pair of rushing touchdowns from Henry Kane helped the Warhawks put away the Bulldogs 31-3. The Warhawks will try and work there way back up into the BCS Bowl Mix but their national title hopes are very, very slim.
