Season Wrap-Up

January 8, 2016

Season Report Posted: November 04, 2008 21:59

The ULM Warhawks (14-0, 9-0) are the 2015 SEC and BCS National Champions. The Warhawks first championship team in school history was led by Junior QB Steve Davis who finished the season with 24 passing touchdowns and only 7 interceptions, also setting a school record for most passing touchdowns in a career. On the ground, ULM was led by dual-threat back Charlie Gibbons who capped off a stellar senior year with 9 rushing touchdowns and 7 receiving touchdowns. All-Conference Receivers Scott Scott and Brandon Davis paved the way in the air with 7 receiving touchdowns a piece. The Monroe defense was led by MLB John Diggs who led the team in interceptions while being near the top on the tackles list as well. After an easier first half, the Warhawks had a tough 2nd half of their season before them and handled it perfectly. With 4 road games and only 2 home games the Hawks had their work cut out for them. The Warhawks first knocked off a pesky South Carolina team followed by an easy win against the New Mexico Lobos. The next game was a road game against the #2 Florida Gators with the Warhawks sitting at #9. The Warhawks came to play and upset the Gators in the swamp 38-14 and rocketed up to #6. The Warhawks followed up their huge win against an easy Kentucky team and won 21-7 and jumped to #5 in the AP Polls. With a close win in Tennessee against the Vol's, the Warhawks had one large obstical in their way, the #1 Oklahoma Sooners. The game went back and forth and it looked that ULM's championship run was about to end when on 3rd and 26 Scott Scott broke loose of coverage and caught a 60 yard bomb to win the game in a stunning fashion for the Warhawks and to move to #2 in the nation. The Warhawks were then set to play #25 Auburn in the SEC Championship game. The Warhawks looked great early but stumbled in the second half enough for the Tigers to come back to tie the game. The Warhawks did escape with a game winning field goal from Chaz Bell and secured their first SEC title in their short 3 year history in the conference. The win ensured the Warhawks a spot in the National Championship game against #1 Ohio State. With no one but Lee Corso picking them to win, the Warhawks went into their first national title appearance with high hopes. The game was a defensive battle that came down to the wire. The Warhawks scored a last minute touchdown to seal the deal and win their first ever national title. This 2015 team will go down forever as the first ULM squad to win a national title. QB Steve Davis will likely have his #19 retired should he decide to go pro. The Warhawks are national champions and will celebrate the victory, but will have to go back to work soon, and start working towards next years title.

Season Report Posted: November 04, 2008 00:57

The UL-Monroe Warhawks are off to a perfect 6-0 (4-0) start and currently stand at #11 in the Top 25 poll. The Warhawks, led by Junior QB Steve Davis, started their season against FCS Northwest and won easily 42-0. They followed their season opener with an SEC game agains a pesky Auburn team. ULM came out on top to move to 2-0. Heading into their 3rd game as underdogs, the Warhawks remained confident against the #14 Ole Miss Rebels. Steve Davis tossed the game winning touchdown pass to Brandon Davis to seal an upset for the Warhawks heading into the bye week. After the bye week, the Warhawks squared off a bad Mississippi State team and dominted by winning 28-14 and earning the 25th rank in the nation going into a game against the Arizona Wildcats. The Warhawks showed their offensive ability against the War Hawks as Scott Scott reeled in 3 catches as well as a touchdown to give the Warhawks a 24-14 win. In their final game of the 1st half of the season, the #20 ULM Warhawks squared off against the #13 Georgia Bulldogs and had a tough task ahead of them. Fortunately for the Warhawks the Georgia defense just didn't show up to play as ULM went on to win 21-7 and catapult to #11 in the nation heading into the 2nd half of the year.
